Peter Navarro, who served as the chief of Trade policy under Trump, has been ordered to report to prison. He refused a congressional subpoena about the January 6 events, when he allegedly had communications with Trump.
This marks one of the many Trump associates who have been hounded by the Biden DOJ as a way to persecute his political enemies. Navarro’s case is particularly unique, as Trump has not been tried for his alleged role in January 6. Fox News says:
Peter Navarro, who served in the White House under former President Trump, was ordered to report to a Miami prison by March 19 to begin serving a four-month sentence for flouting a House Jan. 6 committee subpoena.
In January, U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta sentenced Navarro to four months in prison and ordered him to pay a fine of $9,500. The sentence was two months shorter than the six prosecutors had sought, but Mehta drastically reduced the whopping $200,000 fine sought by the Justice Department.
Navarro invoked executive privilege over the event, which he was asked to claim by Trump himself. The judge, however, forbade the jury from considering this. Navarro’s next hope is for the Supreme Court to rule on Trump’s qualified immunity claim, which would validate Navarro’s defense. The Hill continues:
Navarro told the judge during his sentencing he had an “honest belief” that executive privilege had been invoked by Trump — a matter Mehta precluded him from using as a defense at trial.
The ex-Trump adviser’s lawyers wrote court filings that Mehta’s decision “hamstrung” Navarro’s defense by leaving open the question of whether a president can direct his subordinates not to testify before Congress.
Should Trump win in November, a not insignificant part of his mandate will be to undo the wrongs of the Biden Administration against conservatives the last 4 years. Focusing on it too much, however, could hurt his chances with independents who mostly want to move on from the left-right feuds and return prosperity and sanity to America.
