Only a few days after he released a statement endorsing the faltering 81-year-old president, former President Barack Obama reportedly now seems to be losing interest in President Joe Biden’s chances of winning reelection in private conversations with supporters.
According to The Washington Post, following his dismal debate performance, Obama is informing close aides that Biden’s already-tough path to reelection has now grew significantly more challenging.
According to the story, Obama has long warned Biden about how difficult it will be to defeat Trump and has recently voiced grave worries to Democrats about the difficulties they face in the run-up to the election.
According to fresh polling from Reuters/Ipsos released on Tuesday, only former first lady Michelle Obama can defeat Trump in a head-to-head matchup—and she does so by a double-digit margin, 50-39—which aligns with The Post’s claim about Obama’s harder tone toward Biden in private.
The announcement comes after three Democratic officeholders, Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-WA), and Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME), declared on Tuesday that they think Biden would lose to Trump in autumn. Julian Castro, Obama’s former HUD secretary, urged Biden to step down on Tuesday as well.
Some Democrats have gone on record to talk about Biden’s chances, which means they no longer fear the rest of the party attacking them over this. Even Donald Trump was caught on tape saying he was looking forward to going up against Kamala Harris. While Biden might still be the nominee in the end, his chances appear slimmer than ever to beat Trump.
