Democrat Senator Bob Mendendez is facing serious accusations of bribery by foreign agents. Already charged in federal court, Menendez and his lawyers attempted to have the searches thrown out on constitutional grounds. A federal judge just denied his request, making the case against him even stronger. America’s News Desk has the story:
On Monday, a federal judge dismissed Senator Bob Menendez’s (D-N.J.) arguments that the search warrants carried out at his residence were unconstitutional.
In a recent court ruling, Judge Sidney H. Stein declared that the search warrants utilized to probe Menendez’s emails and search his residence in 2022 did not violate the constitution, as per court documents.
Menendez’s legal team contended that the evidence gathered was unlawfully obtained and claimed that prosecutors had manipulated the evidence.
Lawyers representing Menendez claimed that the warrants contained numerous inaccuracies and omissions that misled the judge who approved them, as per court records.
Stein dismissed the argument, stating that Menendez did not provide sufficient evidence that the warrants were intentionally deceptive.
During a search of Menendez’s residence, FBI agents uncovered $100,000 in gold bars and $480,000 in concealed cash, according to prosecutors.
Accused of accepting over $600,000 in bribes from a group of New Jersey businessmen on behalf of interests in Egypt, he was indicted on bribery charges last fall along with his wife, Nadine Arslanian.
Menendez allegedly served as a foreign agent of Egypt from June 2018 to June 2022. Earlier this year, a new indictment claimed that he received gifts in exchange for assisting a foreign government.
The New Jersey Democrat and his spouse entered a plea of not guilty to the accusations.
Menendez’s conviction would cause disturbance in the Senate, which hasn’t seen a major conviction in decades. While New Jersey will likely not chose a Republican to replace him, this will cause huge damage to the image of the Democrat party who has baselessly accused Republicans of being foreign agents.
